August Walk

Event type: Social
Date: 12th August 2026
Time: 10:00 am
Group: Walking

After the blip in July next month's walk reverts to the normal second Wednesday, the 12th.  I've been planning a 5.1-ish mile wander in and around Holme Woods, visiting the Holme Posts which show the drop in surface level since the draining of Whittlesey Mere in 1853.

There are also a couple of lakes, one of which we admire from a viewpoint and the other we walk past.

You'll have seen reports of the fire in the woods.  I did a third and successful recce the morning the news broke in the afternoon!  I've just spoken to the Fire Service and we should be ok, but I'll have to check later.  I don't have an alternative recced at the moment.

I've booked lunch at the Admiral Wells in Holme.  Their website shows the menu as Menu '24, but I'm told it hasn't changed much.  They do smaller portions of most dishes.  Exceptions are baguettes, ploughman's, jacket potatoes, rib-eye steak, burgers and Mediterranean Vegetable tart.  You won't find a better steak pie anywhere but it is definitely large!

They get very busy and ask for numbers and menu choices about a week in advance, so please let me know your choice by the evening of Wednesday 5th.

Assuming this walk goes ahead, we'll meet in the Great Fen car park on Long Drove (B660) east of Holme, W3W somebody.bookmark.picture.  There won't be a useful postcode but for those with OS maps the six digit grid reference is TL222876.

We'll meet at 9.45 then transfer to as few cars as possible and drive round to the start point on New Long Drove which has limited parking in a lay-by.
